Windows 7 - no sound thru' speakers

I have just acquired a new PC (Dell Vostro) running Windows 7.
Formerly with Windows XP I had no poroblems running Audacity (which i use in conjunction with a USB turntable).
However, I now find I have no sound, either while Recording, or using Playback; also my Waveform is inverted? - what was formerly light shading is now dark and vice versa.
I'm afraid i don't know which version of Audacity I'm running - there is no designation visible when I right click and check Properties; it came with the USB turntable.
Following other posts i have set Microsoft Sound Mapper as Input and Output, and I have checked the box to allow sound while making a recording
Can anyone help, please?
Thankyou.

It tells you if you look in "Help > About Audacity".
I'm guessing it's an old version, so worth upgrading to the latest version available from here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... tly_Builds

read this before installing - it's about Vista but also applies to Win 7 http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... s_Vista_OS

Hi stevethefiddle,
Thanks for your suggestions, but no joy, I'm afraid - still no sound, and still the "inverted" waveform, which would make editing etc difficult, I feel.
I was on v 1.2.4. (!!!), so upgraded to v 1.3.11-alpha as recommended, and downloaded the Windows Vista OS guide. Thanks.
I have the following choices for Playback devices - MS Sound Mapper Output, Speakers (USB Audio CODEC), Realtek Digital Output (Realtek speakers) or Realtek HD, but I think the Realtek devices aren't plugged-in or enabled, according to my Device Manager. For Recording, I have these choices - MS Sound Mapper Input, Microphone (USB Audio CODEC), Stereo Mix (Realtek HD); again Realtek device isn't enabled or plugged in.
The only thing I've noticed, from the Vista guide, is that on page5, the volume bar shown is shaded green, whereas mine doesn't change from blue, even when I change the volume level via the slider in Properties.
Maybe my Vostro 220MT doesn't have an option to record computer playback (page 5 of the Vista guide) - how can i check? The PC has been able to play sound from i-Tunes and RealPlayer.
Any other suggestions gratefully received!

I'm not sure what you mean by that - can you post a screenshot?

See here for enabling audio devices (Vista often switches them off and hides them by default) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ng_devices

That's possible - do what's described in the link above - If the computer supports it there should be a recording device called "Stereo Mix".
The capability to record sounds playing on the computer depends on both the hardware and the drivers. It is a lot more common for sound card drivers on XP to support Stereo Mix than for the drivers on later versions of Windows.

Hi Stevethefiddle,
Hope this image of the waveforms gets to you.
I'll have another go with the Vista OS guide.
Cheers,
Leamington Terrier

Looks like it won't get to you this way - extension docx is not allowed, apparently.
Any other suggestion?

I've now tried it as extension doc - maybe this'll work - no the extension doc is not allowed either!!!

Not sure if this will work in Windows 7....
Open "Paint" (do Microsoft still include that little program?)
Press the "PrintScreen" button on your keyboard (copies the screen to the clipboard)
Paste (from clipboard) into Paint.
Save as a jpg or png file.
