TemporaryTopWindow
Hi there, I am having problems loading Audacity. It is a similar problem that has been reported by others, but i cannot find a solution to it. Upon clicking the Audacity icon to start the program, a bluish/grey box pops up that says "TemporaryTopWindow". This box stays on the screen for about 20 seconds, then closes and nothing else happens. I have removed Audacity and re-downloaded it, but it still occurs. Audacity used to work on my computer (Windows XP) with no problems. Not sure what changes have occurred to make it stop working.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Do the story-telling thing. "One morning, I started the computer like I always do...."

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
I have no idea what that means. Is that sarcasm?
If not, the story goes like this: One morning, I started my computer like I always do and clicked the Audacity icon. A bluish/grey box popped up that said TemporaryTopWindow. The box stayed for 20 seconds, closed, and nothing else happened.
End of story.

So it was off all night and you do power it down. A lot of people don't.
Did you notice any shutdown problems the night before? Did you do any Microsoft upgrades the day before or do you have your machine on Auto Update? Did you use Audacity the day before? Are you running out of hard drive space?
<<<A bluish/grey box popped up that said TemporaryTopWindow.>>>
Something in the operating system tried to open Audacity and couldn't do it. Damaged initialization files? Corrupted registry? Was this from a Desktop Icon, or Start, Programs.....etc? Do they both fail the same way?
Can you drill down into the Program Files folder and try to launch Audacity from the actual executable file?

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
The computer is set up for automatic updates. I don't know if there was a Windows update between the time Audacity was working and the time it wasn't. Everything else is running smoothly on the computer, there's lots of hard drive space. I have tried to load it from different icons, it makes no difference.
I don't know how to correct registry problems, and since Audacity is the only problem my computer is having I'm not sure how much I want to fool around trying to correct it for fear of messing up the whole system. I was just hoping there was a quick/easy fix.

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
I've never heard of this problem before, so you have a unique situation.
You know Audacity will allow you to run 1.2.x and 1.3.x on the same machine? 1.3.x is "beta" software, but many people find they can run that when the earlier version won't.
1.4 stable version is on the horizon.

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
Hey koz, I posted this a few weeks ago and just accidentally figured something out. I loaded the 1.3. beta version on my computer and it ran just fine........until I installed the VST Enabler (link is: http://audacityteam.org/vst/) for windows. Immediately after loading this I got the exact same problem as before with the 1.2 version, that is a "TemporaryTopWindow" and no program loading. I then removed the VST enabler and got my old version of Audacity (1.2) running again. Beta version works too. I tried re-installing the VST and the problem came back.
So...........I have a functioning program but cannot use any plug-ins.
Suggestions?..............

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
Aha..... I searched the forum under "VST enabler" and found some other people had issues with the vst. Thankfully KevinR had posted a link to an older version of the enabler. I pasted it into Audacity (1.2) and everything works fine, including plug-ins.
Here's the link again:

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
This seems to be something with the VST Bridge Enabler 1.1 plugin. I've only ever experienced it after installing that. In fact, I just reinstalled the VST Enabler and temporarytopwindow came back. I could still run Audacity, though.
The VST_Enabler.dll doesn't pick up in Audacity for me. I tried it as-is and I tried it renamed to replace vst-bridge.dll (after backing up the installed vst-bridge.dll) and I get nothing from it. For the moment, I'll just deal with temporarytopwindow, since Audacity does still load.
Audacity 1.2.6
Windows XP Home SP2
AMD Sempron 3100+ (1.8 GHz)
768 MiB DDR400 RAM
Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic PCI sound card
By the way, I freakin' love Audacity and use it in conjunction with Kristal AE for all of my recording and production. You guys do a wicked great job.

Re: TemporaryTopWindow
Ahhhhh, thanks a bunch, Nola, for the link!! This worked wonders. I had been having the same problem for months and couldn't figure out how to resolve it.
