Using windows xp, a usb turntable and audacity 1.2.6 software, recording exported to computer but when played back no sound.

Did you get the bouncing red recording meters while you were recording the show and did you get two lines of blue waves? Anything like this (Your pictures may not exactly match)?

That means you captured a show and now we just need to figure out where it went. If you didn't get those, then your capture system failed. Let us know.

Yes, the blue waves were there and I was able to play it back through the audacity program. When found as file on computer played but no sound.

Did you Export from Audacity tp make WAV files or MP3s - and did you try to play these?

Or did you try to play the <project>.aup file that Audacity creates? If this is the case then be aware that a .aup file is not an audio file it is just a little part of Auacity's complex project file structure.

A wave file was made, and that is what I tried to play.

ok was it a WAV at 16-bit and 44.1kHz ?

And you tried to play back the WAV with what particular software ?

@jonemere: USB devices have a habit of hijacking the entire sound – output as well as input – and they don’t tend to have loudspeakers (hence “no sound”).

What you need to do is to direct the Windows sound output to your PC's soundcard (on XP this is: Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio>Sound Playback ) - and make this setting to the PC soundcard.

You may also need to ensure that Audacity sends it output to the PC soundcard Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback - and set this also to your PC soundcard. You may need to stop and restart Audacity for this setting to take effect.

I have an Audacity project file that played just fine about a month ago. However, now when I play it, the sound level needles do not move off of zero. And of course I do not get any sound either but then this would be consistent with the metered output. The project file contents appear to be OK in the visual display and it still contains the labels that I had inserted.

Is there an Audacity option that I have overlooked which will turn on the sound output?

PS: Now a few days later (1/10/10), I tried opening the original WAV file from the CD. It played with sound from Audacity (including of course the bouncing meters) AND then after closing this file (without saving a project) and opening the project file mentioned above that it now plays with sound as well. So I guess the problem is solved for now but I would definitely like to know why this happened.
