No playback?

I am using Audacity 1.2.4 in conjunction with Behringer's Podcaststudio. When I attempt to record, the "blue lines" indicating pickup appear, but playback yields no audio. I have already browsed this forum as well as the very unhelpful FAQ on this topic. How can I remedy this, and how exactly do I need to set up input, output, etc. for the particular hardware?

I assume this includes a USB audio mic?
In which case:
When you plug in a USB device like this your computer hands over control of all sound services to the USB device - both input and output. Since your USB mic doesn't have a set of speakers, you then don't get any sound from the computer (not even the normal computer sounds).
All you need to do is to get your O/S and Audacity to retarget the sound output onto your computer's on-board soundcard. In Windows use Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback (I don't know the MAC equivalent) - in Audacity use Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Playback Device - you may need to close and restart Audacity for the change to take effect.

Okay...but WHAT exactly do I need to have the input and output set to on each?

figured it out:
WINDOWS and Audacity:
Input--USB mic codec
Output--SigmaTel Audio

Okay...now that that's worked and I've saved a test file, I tried to install then open LAME. All I saw for a brief second was a black box with what looked like computer code in it, and then nothing else happened. All subsequent attempts yielded the same results...am I doing something wrong? (NOTE: same settings/computer etc. as previous posts in this topic)

Download the ZIP version (for Windows) from this page:
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar
Extract the contents of the zip file into your Audacity folder (which is in "Program Files").
Open up Preferences (from the Edit menu) and on the "File Formats" page, click on the "Find Library" button.

I've been saving all of these such setup and other files to an external hard drive...does this change the situation?
And I do not follow at all: after I extracted the contents to the Audacity folder I have in the hard drive, what and how do I open "Preferences from the Edit menu?" All I can see under Edit while in F:/Audacity are "Select All" and "Invert Selection"...
It seems I need to be walked through this more than I had imagined...

Audacity needs to be installed on an internal drive.
The default installation of Audacity will create an Audacity folder in c:/Program Files/
The exact name of the Audacity program folder depends on which version of Audacity you have, but it should be something like:
C:/Program Files/Audacity/
or
C:/Program Files/Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)
It may be easiest if we start the whole installation from the start, but first, how much free space do you have on your C:/ drive?
