That's not much space for doing audio recording so it is definitely worth seeing if you can clear more space on the C: drive.

On Windows you should have at least 10% free space at all times.

Recording will typically use around 700MB for 30 minutes of stereo audio and if you do any audio processing this will increase rapidly as Audacity keeps copies of the data so that you can Undo operations. When you have finished editing a recording you can Export the final mix as an audio file to your external drive and delete the Audacity Project to recover disk space.

There is an excellent free program for Windows called Ccleaner which can safely remove large quantities of junk (temporary files and such like) from Windows computers.

Available disk space should not be fragmented as this can drastically reduce the performance of the hard drive, so after clearing some space you should defragment the drive.

To make a fresh install of Audacity:

1) Uninstall all versions currently installed.
2) Look in C:Program Files and make sure that no audacity folders have been left behind - if they have, delete them.
3) Download this .REG file http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacdef.reg to your computer and run it - this will reset Audacity Preferences to default values.
4) Download Audacity 1.3.11 from here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... tly_Builds
5) Install Audacity 1.3.11 in the default location.
6) Download the ZIP version (for Windows) from this page: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar
7) Connect your USB microphone and check in Windows Control Panel that it is selected as the recording device and that your sound card is selected as the playback device.
8) Extract the contents of the lame.zip file into your Audacity folder (which is in "C:/Program Files/").
9) Open Audacity and click on "Edit menu > Preferences > Libraries", then click on the "Locate" button in the "Lame" section.
10) Go to the "Devices" section of Audacity Preferences and select the USB microphone as the recording device and your sound card as the playback device.

You should now be ready to Rock and Roll.
