This announcement appears at the top of each page:

You have to use the Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu to select your input.
Edit: I've deleted your other post. Don't cross post.

I see that the input selector is always grey on Vista, but I have XP!

The input selector on Audacity's main screen does not work for many users, including many XP users who use newer drivers that conform more closely to the Vista standard.
You have to go to the Edit -> preferences -> audio i/o menu to select your input. The keyboard shortcut is [ctrl]+p.

I only found three choices for input/output:
Microsoft sound mapper, Realtek HD Audio & Modem #0 Line. Which one should I use? Or is something missing?

In that case, you'll want to look at this page:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... trol_Panel
The help for XP is about 1 page down. Select the input you need as detailed in those three pictures, and then set Audacity to use the "Microsoft Sound Mapper" input. Whatever you have selected in the Microsoft Mixer (it's the second picture for XP on that page I just sent you to) will be routed to the Microsoft Sound Mapper input.
