Hi
I'm a real novice user. I want to take bits of certain tracks on my iPod, and mix them into a new track. What is the best way to start this, and what simple steps should I follow? I'll worry about slowing stuff down or speeding it up as soon as I've mastered the easy bits!

You kind of left us in the dirt there.

You can't easily "back up" from an iPod. You have to sync your iPod with your iTunes account and then get the tunes from there. There are no convenient export functions in iTunes, so you have to copy which will likely give you Apple's AAC audio compression format, not MP3. Audacity doesn't speak AAC.

Anywhere in here, Apple is going to raise its hand and tell you you don't have permission to do what you're trying to do. And if iTunes doesn't get excited, Windows Media will take over and start dictating terms.

So no, the speed change will be the least of your problems.

Apple's Copy Protection is really well thought out and in a vast majority of cases, doesn't get in the way, even if you try some really odd things. Even if you break it, there are provisions to rescue you. But try to copy that music to more than, I think it's three computers, or make more than five CDs and you find that the Apple DRM really is back there watching.

The easiest thing to do is run a cable from the Headphone Out on the iPod to the Line In on your computer. Set Audacity to record from the Line In input in the edit -> preferences -> audio i/o menu. You'll have to adjust the recording volume using the iPod's volume controls.
