Hi, I have just got a USB record player from Tchibo and am trying to convert vinyl to CD. I am using Windows XP service pack 2 and Audacity v 1.2. The recording to audacity files is fine, but the exported file has no sound and the CD produced is silent. What am I missing please?

Are you exporting your tracks as WAv files - you need to?
If you are already creating WAV files - can these files be played ok with Windows Media Player? If so then the music file is ok.
Are you burning a Music CD and not a data CD - data CDs will not play in most CD players?

Hi. Yes I am exporting as a WAV file but Windows media player plays the recorded file - but no sound!

This is a very basic question but .... are you sure you have got the volume turned up in windows? Do you, for instance, get the windows beeps and sounds?
Note too, that turning the volume down in Audacity with the speaker slider seems to reset the Windows volume.
I only ask because I have done the same myself in the past and wondered why I had no sound.

If you're still having trouble, I'll go back even further.
Can you play and hear the audio in Audacity? I hope so.
If you can, it should be a simple matter of clicking File -> Export. Is something that basic not working? If so, this might be tough to fix.

Hey - it's working. Somehow Audacity had switched my sound playback to the USB input instead of my soundcard. Relief all round, and my wife is pleased too as I am no longer frowning all the time!! Thanks so much for all your help. I find at 70 I don't always get to the bottom of these problems unassisted!!

Doh! I should have thought of that. USB audio devices like to set themselves as your default audio device without telling you.
