Trouble with External Mic

Post by sk8rbunn » Fri Dec 18, 2009 3:33 am

I installed Audacity to record some stuff for a project, and everything was picked up by my external mic(uses line-in instead of USB if that matters any), but when I hopped into Ventrillo later, it wasnt picking up my mic and couldnt be heard on vent. Any thing I can do to fix my mic?

Does your laptop have a built-in microphone? The only way your microphone would have worked is if you plugged it into the Mic-In, not the Line-In. If you do have both connections and you plugged into Mic-In the first time and Line-In the second, then yes, only one would have worked.

In all cases, the sound used by your computer is set by the Windows Sound Control Panels. Audacity doesn't handle any of that.

It's my desktop. the mic is a line-in i believe. i use the audio ports on the front of the comp not a USB mouse. Vent worked fine the other night, this morning I downloaded and installed audacity, and curentlly no one can hear me in Vent.

<<<Ventrilo - Surround Sound Voice Communication Software
Free real-time voice chat for group communications. Supports surround sound.>>>

Oh my. Highly custom software and drivers.

Audacity is a really simple program and likes running on a really simple machine. If a trip through the Windows Control Panels didn't help, you may need to run the Ventrilo program or installer again. And then stop using Audacity -- at least in the 1.2 version. You might try it again with 1.3. Audacity 1.3 is much more aware of complex systems.

There are similar system problems with Skype.

Just a note, does any of this come back to life if you restart the machine from cold power off (pull the power cord for a bit after the machine halts)?

Hi,
If your system is having the Realtek chips on your motherboard, you need to perform setting in the control panel of Realtek. Enable the settings of Line-in and Mic-in the sound settings. I hope this may help you.
