Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Simultaneous Recording Capability?

Post by Hallass01 » Mon Dec 10, 2007 12:02 am

This may be a pretty simple question to answer. I recently purchased the Line6 USB recording interface. It came with Ableton Live, but I have found Audacity to be much more user friendly for basic recording. I have had no problems recording a guitar track and then going back and putting down the vocals & other tracks. However, i'd like to be able to recording vocals while recording guitar at the same time.

I've tried everything I can to set up the preferences to allow for recording vocals & guitars at the same time but cannot seem to get it to work. From what i've read online, it may not be possible with the Audacity software to do that but thought i'd check with the forum and see if anyone else has figured it out.

Thanks!

I think I got pieces of this. Audacity will record up to, I think, 8 channels of sound from one sound device. Most multiple channel devices appear to Windows as multiple devices and Audacity can only handle one device at a time. We'll see what the other people say.

Thank god for a search engine on this forum.

I purchased a TonePort UX1 myself, and having the same issue. Is there a way at all to get it to read 3 - 4?

For those who dont know much about the Line6 stuff, here is a link to the way it works. http://en.audiofanzine.com/external-aud ... y,157.html

I recieved ableton also, and still having the same problems. Much prefer Audacity tho. Any help would be great.

I don't have a TonePort to try, but it is common on multi-channel devices to select a "multi" driver as the record device in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" which then records ALL available channels from the device. Audacity is at the mercy of the device drivers which do not usually make individual ports available apart from the default ports (usually channels 1 and 2), so the options are often: "channel 1", or "channels 1 and 2", or "all channels".

The actual options depend on your sound card and what options the sound card makes available to Audacity.
Audacity 1.3 is sometimes able to access options that are not available in Audacity 1.2

thanks steve.

I am at the Pref menu now. Its reading a bit like this,

Playback
Line6 Toneport

Recording
Line6 Toneport

Channels: 2 (Stereo)

Currently records the guitar only, but if I swap between the Mic, and Guitar on the Gearbox - It records either one, just wont record both at the same time.

Will download 1.3 and see if its compatible there.

My laptop soundcard is a Realtek High Def onboard.

ok.. downloaded and running 1.3.

Still the same issue, set to record both, but it seem to only read the guitar signal.
I'll keep trying, and keep checking back.
Thanks in advance :)

Are ports 3 and 4 real inputs, or are they virtual ports?

Most likely virtual I think.

The way Ive read it - 1 - 2 ports are for the guitar or mic, when running singly - but when you set it to both guitar is 1 - 2 and mic is 3 - 4. Its reading the 1 - 2 no worries in both situations, just the 3 - 4 dont appear on Audacity, or Live Lite for that matter. If theyre not appearing I cant really set them to read it.
