"Audacity.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I have Windows XP service pack 3. I have had NO problems with Audacity opening files until yesterday.

New occurrence:
Open Audacity. "Open [my file]"
"audacity.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. More info: AppName: audacity.exe, AppVer 0.0.0.0 ModName audacity.exe ModVer0.0.0.0 Offset 00095f61"

I got this multiple times. I deleted all audacity shortcuts and the actual program. I reinstalled it from the website, today. Tried again and get the same message. I tried to upload the file by going to: "Project-->import audio" with the same results.

I hope someone else is having this problem so I can be told how to fix it?

This has come up before, but quite a while ago. If I remember correctly it's a Windows update that triggers the issue (I wish they would say "Windows has a problem and needs to close Audacity" - that would be more accurate). Assuming it is the same problem, you are not going to be able to fix it by re-installing Audacity 1.2.6 as it is an incompatibility problem. Upgrading to Audacity 1.3 should fix it straight away, but if you have any difficulty let us know (hey, let us know anyway ;))
