i got a stereo cable with a plug both ends.
one end into the mp3 player. (sandisk, sansA M240)
the other into the microphone socket of the Toshiba Satellite P-100 computer. ( XP )
when i select microphone in audacity 1.2.6 i only see mono.
what am i doing wrong.
i would like to make a CD of the music on the MP3 player
i know the MP3 tunes are in stereo!

True, but the connection on the side of your laptop isn't. Most PC laptops have a Mic-In (pink) and a headphone out and that's it. Mic-In is expecting a tiny, delicate, mono microphone signal. I'm surprised that you don't have sound quality problems. Sound fading and changing by itself or crunchy, harsh audio.

There is no high quality, high level, stereo input on most laptop PCs like there is on a Mac.

So you're in the market for a nice USB sound card.

Or if you can get the MP3 files off the player and onto your PC - find converter software to convert from MP3 to WAV (Google is your friend ...)
