Audacity to save as several FLAC/MP3 files...

Post by DjBR » Tue Dec 01, 2009 2:31 pm

I am doing a project already mentioned here, a speech recording station PC. The computer is quite old, a Sempron 2300+ with 256MB of RAM memory. I have installed wattOS, a light-weight Ubuntu Jaunty variation and it is running quite OK. There is a dedicated Sound Blaster Live on this system, which is quite good. Audacity is going to capture audio from a professional sound mixer - projects will be exported to FLAC and burned to CD.

What I wanted to know is if there is a way to split the audio automatically when saving, in chunks of 5 minutes. As a speech could last 40 minutes, the person deploying these CDs want the CD-Audio to have several tracks, so that it would be easier to navigate a 40 minute speech. Know what I mean? Does Audacity have that feature?

You will need to upgrade to the 1.3 version of Audacity - one of it's new features is the ability to add labels at regular intervals.

You will use Analyze > Regular Interval Labels

Then you will need to use File > Export Multiple to export a set of files based on these labels

You can get 1.3 fro, here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

No problem if these CDs are just as data backups or for playing on a computer. I presume that you are aware that for an audio CD that is compatible with most CD players you need to make an "audio CD" (different from a data CD).
