Can't even record

I have opened Audacity, but nothing seems to work. How do I record?
I think I must have something missing.
To record what button do I activate first?
Can't get more basic than this huh?
But I'm not kidding, how do I record please
the screen is grayed out and nothing works.
Is there an online user manual somewhere?
