Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

can't find file

Post by rpschultz9 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 6:33 pm

I recorded a song from a cassette tape and exported it as an MP3 - I went into Windows Exporer to copy the .MP3 file to my MP3 player but it wasn't there. I went back into Audacity and tried to save it again but it said it was already there and did I want to over write the exiting file. Why can't I see the MP3 file in Exporer?
I also exported it as a .WAV file, hoping I would at least see that, but it's not there either.
Then I did a search at the Root of C: for *.MP3 thinking maybe I'd saved it to a diferent folder than the one I was looking in, but the file didn't show up that way either? Why can't I find the file?

Thanks for any help you can provide

Robert

When you click on "Export as MP3", you get an export window; "Save MP3 File As:"
In the top of that window is a dropdown box which tells you where Audacity is saving your file.

Yes, it says C:Program FilesAudacity - but when I go into Explorer and look in that folder there is no MP3 file. And if I do a search at the root of C: it shows me a few MP3 files I have but not the one I created with Audacity.

I just tried again. When I go into Audacity I choose FileOpen and there is my project file. When I click on it the project opens and I can hear what I recorded. If I choose FileExport as MP3 I get the dialog box with the name of the MP3 file I "Exported" before and it says File already exists do you want to over write it - the folder is C:Program FilesAudacity - but there are no MP3 files in that folder

It looks like Windows is hiding the files from you.

If you export your MP3 file to a folder in "My Documents", instead of C:Program FilesAudacity can you find it there?

In Windows Explorer, in the View tab of the Tools menu (on XP) there is an option to show hidden files and folders. Tick that box. It is something similar on Vista. There is also an option that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Un-tick that.

As a general rule, you shouldn't use the folders under Program Files to store your music / data files. Best practice is to keep the Program Files folders for the files that are needed to make the programs work, and store your documents / pictures / music / Audacity projects etc. in "My Documents"

Hey Irish,

Thanks for the suggestions, Exporting to My Documnets worked. The files appear there and they work. I tried the hidden files stuff you suggested but that didn't help, the otehr files are still hidden somewhere. I didn't make any changes when I first Imported the MP3s, I just went with the default, thinking the company should know what it's doing!!! NOT :)

Thanks again for the suggestion

Robert
