Unable to record via sound card w/SonyVaio VGN-SR220J Laptop

Post by bab1 » Wed Nov 18, 2009 4:27 am

I have used Audacity in the past on XP systems. Today I installed 1.2.x on a Sony Vaio VGN-SR220J laptop. I was surprised to find the only option was to record using the external mic. No sound card listed at all. This laptop uses Vista Home Premium 64bit. The sound subsystem appears to be different than that of Win2000/XP

I understand that this might be a driver problem. I heard that Sony's version of the the Realtek driver won't allow the card to be accessed directly. Is this so? Is there a replacement driver (i.e. Win7 or a Vista from a different source) that can be used?

Yes Vista (and Windows 7) have a completely different sound system to previous Windows versions. I liked the sound system on XP, but not at all on Vista.

Sometimes you can activate more inputs in the manner described here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ng_devices

(but some laptops just have crippled sound systems which you can do little about other than get an external sound card)
