E.Q. Frequency chart needed!!

Dear Anyone.
Got an E.Q. plug-in from the Audacity plugin page. It looks great. You enter the frequency you're using, slide the sliders and get a perfect E.Q. job. Onlly one, rather huge, problem.
How the heck do you KNOW what frequency you want to E.Q.? You import your soundfile. There's no scale of frequencies that I can see anywhere (if there is, or if there's a plug-in anyone knows that gives you a scale of frequencies, Please tell me!) As there's no scale of frequencies, you're working entirely by guess work. You might hit the right number sometime this side of next Christmas, by luck. Or you might not. Probably the latter.
How do you find out what frequency you're trying to E.Q.? Logic - only works on Applemacs, darn it! - gets round the problem by having a line of light with a bump in it. You slide the bump about until the sound 'sounds right'. Nice and - er - Logical! Please, if anyone knows how to work out what the frequency IS you want to change, can you tell me?
Yours hopefully
