squeaking noises

I am trying to record the audio off of videos I have shot with my camera, a Sony Cyber-shot. However, every time I record on Audacity, I get loud squeaking noises over the audio. There are probably 7 or 8 loud squeaks for every minute of audio I record. I have tried different computers with no luck.....

Not sure what the problem is, but I would really like to get that audio for an important Powerpoint I am working on.
I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Describe the steps of getting the sound into Audacity. Are you playing the camera and capturing in real time? Are you trying to decode the video bitstream? Does the audio come out of the device already to edit?

The show plays perfectly and clearly for a minute and then squeaks and then continues on?

I'm not doing anything live. I'm just importing the videos from my camera flashdrive, or some of them are on my desktop where I dragged them. I just go to "Import Audio" and choose a video (MOVO2972 for example), and then hit record. I have never used Audacity before, so maybe I am not doing something quite right?

And the squeaks occur every few seconds...making any audio I record just about impossible to listen to!

Chances are the movie sound isn't going to open up in Audacity, but if it is, you should Open or Import, point to the file, and then OK the panel. That's it. If the show doesn't arrive, or arrives damaged, then you may need to convert the show into something Audacity will recognize

If you Right-Click on the video file and Get Properties, Advanced, what type of file is it?

Audacity is not a terrifically good converter. It likes MP3 and WAV/AIFF sound files.

Did any software come with the camera?

Oh, the squeaking is probably coming from putting Audacity in record with the laptop speakers and build-in microphone open at the same time. This is a cousin of the high school gym where somebody will try to make an announcement and the microphone will start howling.

The videos are importing okay, the music sounds good underneath the squeaks. It records clear, with not a lot of static or anything. The videos are: VLC media file (.mpg)

So is there any way to fix the squeak problem? Can I shut off the built in mike somehow?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried getting VLC to convert the files (the audio stream) to WAV format?
