Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Hi Koz,
It just says "Emkay CE" on it. It's not wireless though. It's quite old, bought it a used goods store. I Also have a cheapee from the dollar store, but it does the same thing.

Shucks [getting fresh coffee].

It still doesn't Google. It's fully wired, right? There is a pink connector and a green or black one? The pink one likely being the microphone?

Let's back waaaaay up.

Does the system play music? Has it always?

Download the piano trill:

It's six seconds long and it's perfectly recorded--by me. No distortion, no skipping, and no MP3 gargling. Open it in Audacity and play it. Does that sound OK? If you have a big sound system, it should sound like a concert grand piano in the same room with you.

Hi Koz,
O.K. Now we're getting somewhere. I started looking for another sound card, but decided to check the net for problems with the Via AC'97 card (by the way it's integrated into the mobo). And low and behold several people reported problems due to incorrect drivers. So I downloaded new ones and here's the result

I think it's working fine now, no distortion, no hum, no nothing.
I want to thank you very, very, very much for hanging in with me and guiding me to this solution. It's very much appreciated.

P.S. Your sound clip worked fine, as of course you knew it would.
