Recording voice

I have to do a podcast for a class. My laptop has a built in microphone, but when I record, some setting is completely off because I sound like a man. I even recorded a woman on tv, and she came out sounding like a man.

What is the deal? I have played around with all the settings and can't seem to figure it out...

Can we infer you're a woman?

I'm sure somebody will come in after me and tell you something to magic to click on, but I'm going with a very seriously broken sound card. Has it ever worked?

Windows used to have a simple program called Windows Sound Recorder. Try capturing your voice with that as a test and leave Audacity closed.

Windows Sound Recorder
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment

Something you can try -
Open Preferences (from the Edit menu) and go to the "Quality" tab.
If the "sample rate is set at 44100, try changing it to 48000.
Close and restart Audacity.
