Audacity fails on Windows 7 with Line6 Gearbox <fixed>

Audacity used to work fine for me under Windows 2000 and XP SP2, with Gearbox 3.0 and my Toneport UX2 but now fails to work correctly on Windows 7.
The process starts up and keeps running, but never manages to generate a window or an error message.
This was the case for both 1.2.6 and 1.3.9.
As soon as the Toneport is disconnected, the Audacity Window pops up just fine.
I started with Gearbox 3.0 and tried upgrading to 3.7, which solved the problem.
This was not entirely intuitive to me since it's not outright obvious that Gearbox is also packaged with all the drivers for the device, or that one application can directly prevent another from working.
Hopefully somebody else having the same problem will find this helpful, or we can at least get an error message in future.
