Can't "Save Project As"

Post by CalvinZ » Fri Nov 06, 2009 8:03 am

I'm using Audacity to edit a podcast I do - I have opening "bumper" music with voice introduction in two separate tracks and I have closing bumper music with voice as well. I edit each episode and then use the Intro.aud file to pull it all together, copy/pasting all the different tracks into the Intro.aup file. All is good through this process. I then export the audio to an MP3, which works fine too. Here's where I get an error. I then take the project file, again, remember I started with my Intro.aup file and copied all the other stuff into it, and try to save it as a unique, new project. When I do this, I get an error saying the folder I'm trying to save to is full or read only. It's neither and I can't figure out why I can't save the file. I don't want to save the project with the name Intro.aup because I want to reuse that for each podcast introduction and I want to have an .aup/project of the final podcast in case I have to fix something I missed in the initial edit. Any idea why I can't save it? Is the problem that I'm starting with an existing project and trying to save it as a new project?

Thanks!

UPDATE:
After writing this, I decided to open a new instance of Audacity and copy all of the tracks for my podcast to that. I then tried to save it and it worked. So seems pretty certain that saving an existing project with a new name isn't something that works.

An existing project with a new name (Save AS..) should work. Take care with naming files, they don't like special characters. Best to stick with letters, numbers, space, underscore and hyphen.

Also, there has been a bug that can cause spurious "not writeable" errors, particularly if the project contains any completely silent tracks. This bug has apparently been fixed in the latest Audacity code.

For older versions, you can usually get round the problem by ensuring:
1) You do have permission to write in the location that you have selected, and that you do have sufficient disk space (you will normally need at least double the size of the file - also, Windows likes to have at least 10% free disk space at all times).
2) Check that you are not using any special characters in the file name.
3) Remove any silent tracks before saving.
