Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Can't close Audacity, it keeps reloading

Post by Bloodaxe » Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:32 pm

It seems to behave okay on my XP partition, but when running Windows 7, though it seems to otherwise run okay, when I close the program, it reloads by itself immediately, even when closing it with the task manager. Only a reboot will get rid of it. I've already tried re-downloading and re-installing. I also tried V 1.39 and it also occurs with that version. I searched this forum and couldn't find an answer.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Not surprising. First I heard of it. You are launching each operating system's own Audacity, right? You're not trying to launch the XP one from Vista?

Who does your virus protection? That's one explanation for Sudden Computer Insanity. Audacity likes running on Really Simple Computers and people run into all sorts of problems when they try to get fancy.

Still, first I heard of this. I'm betting you didn't reinstall Audacity. Did it ask you "English?" at the beginning of each new install? If it didn't, then you're standing on old and possibly damaged preference files.

But that wouldn't necessarily give you multiple launches. That's hard without a virus back there "helping you." I'm dying to hear what the others say when the sun gets around to them.

For Audacity 1.3.9, go to
Edit menu > Preferences > Interface
Tick the box that says "Closing Last Window Quits Audacity" (this is on by default, so I guess that you must have switched it on by accident at some point. Re-installing Audacity will copy the Preferences from your previous installed version).

Well, thank you both!

Stevethefiddle, re-checking that box seems to have done the trick. I had indeed unchecked that boxin the Windows 7 installation. It's still odd though, one should still be able to close the program my clickng the red X or selecting exit from the file menu.

It should close if you select "Exit" from the file menu - not sure if that's been tested on Windows 7.

(Why are we still in the Audacity 1.2 part of the forum? Hopefully you are using Audacity 1.3)

Oh, I do remember this. I got burned with this a long time ago. It's not that the program relaunches itself from a cold start -- like you would be editing a Word document and Audacity would suddenly pop up -- it just never leaves. I think in Mac it was a little more surreal. Audacity > Exit would close the program, but Apple-Q would not. Something strange like that which would only affect a subset of users.
