Audacity 1.2.6 & Windows 7

I've installed Audacity on two hardware platforms under Windows 7, a Dell OptiPlex GX620 and a 745. Both systems have integrated Analog Devices SoundMax ADI-198X audio hardware. The Win 7 device manager reports that the audio circuitry is operating properly.

My problem is with the Audacity recording source dropdown box. This box is greyed-out and no sources are apparently available. If I go to the Audacity preferences I see the Microsoft Sound Mapper-Input and SoundMax Digital Audio but neither selection allows me to populate and use the recording source dropdown box on the main screen.

Is there a setting I'm overlooking to get this to work? I've tried installing and running Audacity in XP compatibility mode but it behaves in exactly the same way.

You really should be on Audacity 1.3. 1.2 was designed four operating systems ago. How many programs are you still running that you had running on Windows 98? Far from being "unstable," Audacity 1.3 is the only program of the bunch still working on the modern computers.

I installed the Windows 7 upgrade to XP. After I loaded audacity 1.2 my sound card soundblaster live 24 bit, will not work properly. I also have a gayed out area in the input selection area. I am running a Dell 8400, 3 gb mem and 2 sata hard drives. Any suggestions?

See if there are any Windows 7 compatible drivers for your sound card. If not, you will probably need to replace your sound card (or replace Windows 7).

I downloaded a few Vista drivers and finally found one that would work. The secret was going into the Sounds applet of the Win 7 Control Panel and setting the desired source as the default recording device. Setting the same device as the recording source in the Audacity preferences allows me to capture the audio.

Food for thought...

I installed Audacity on an OptiPlex 745 with Windows 7. Lo and behold, the input selector is now enabled and shows the Line In and Microphone selections so viewtopic.php?f=12&t=796 is not the whole answer.

Now if I can just restore the Stereo Mix selection so I can record playback directly like on the GX620. This seems to relate to a registry entry that is setup by the driver installation; the capability is there but the OS doesn't recognize it unless the driver makes the required registry entries.

How do i turn back into window XP from window 7? Seems like i couldn't play any games in window 7. Every time i boot from my window XP CD, the blue screen comes out and says problem detected, some **** like that and it says for me to restart. Help please?

You will probably need to reformat your hard drive (unless anyone knows any tricks to avoid having to do so).
Reformatting your hard drive will eradicate all data on the disk - so don't do it if there is any data on the disk that you want to keep.

Most Linux "Live CD" disks include a disk formatting utility. In fact, this could be a good opportunity to try Linux (Ubuntu is a very good choice for first time Linux users).
