just got the innovative technology usb turntable with the audacity software. installed software, plugged turntable into my pc via the line out (my pc has an audio line input in the sound card) and im getting good levels from the input, but i can't hear anything at all! the only thing i can think of is maybe because my video/audio out is HDMI. is there any setting on the audacity preferences that i have to change in order to hear it through the HDMI input? thanks for any help you guys can give me, and if you need any more detailed info on my connections or pc specs please let me know.

The best way to monitor your recording is by connecting the analogue outputs of the turntable to an amplifier.

You probably can't hear any sounds on your computer while the turntable is connected (including other software and even system sounds).
If this is the case, then Windows has done its usual trick and set your turntable as the playback device, which is a real shame as the turntable has no USB playback capability.

To fix this, go into the Windows Control Panel and find the "Sounds and Audio Devices". In there you can set the recording and playback devices. The recording device should be set to USB and the playback device set to your normal sound card. Make the necessary changes and close the Control Panel. I wish they told people this in the instructions!

You now need to restart Audacity for it to register the changes.

If you do not want to or cannot connect your turntable to an amplifier, go into Audacity Preferences (from the Edit menu). I think it's on the Audio I/O tab that you will find an option for "software playthrough" which you need to enable. Also check that the Recording device is set to USB and the playback device set to your normal sound card. I can't remember if a restart is required - probably not, but if it does not seem to take effect then restart Audacity.

Note that with "software playthrough" enabled there is a slight delay (1/2 a second 'ish) before the sound comes out through the speakers because Audacity is now recording from your USB device, then playing it back through your normal sound card and that takes a bit of time.
