Certainly that's the program, yet I have no clue how to make a screen full of words become a plugin. Help for idiots like me would be greatly appreciated.
Right-click on the link then download it to a file. The file name will end in ".ny". Drag the resulting file into your Audacity plug-ins folder. It will show up in the Effect menu as "Compress Dynamics".

After you install the tool, restart Audacity if it was already running.

Ok I got it
I can now use the compressor, but it's made for technical geniuses, which I am not.
The graph that shows up looks fancy enough, but I have no clue how to correctly use it.
Guess I can play with it a bit
(I also downloaded Audacity 1.3.9)

Well, the newer version is quite nice. But it won't help you install plug-ins.
In the same directory (folder) as Audacity is in, there should be a folder named "plug-ins". Just put the "compress.ny" file into that folder.

Yes, upgrading to 1.3.9 is a good idea - it's much better than the old 1.2.6
No, it probably won't help you to install Nyquist plug-ins as the procedure is the same.
Yes, Audacity 1.3 supports "type 3" Nyquist plug-ins which are not supported by Audacity 1.2 (a lot of Nyquist plug-ins do not work in Audacity 1.2).
See here for how to install plug-ins (and several other useful links):

Ok, I have messed a bit with it, and when I tried to save the
resulting audio file, I am only allowed to saver it as an xml file (??) or an aup file
No idea how to save as MP3 or other format

Sometimes it doesn't work even if you're not.
Audacity will not Save a sound file. To get a common WAV sound file you have to Export one. This will produce a very large sound file with little or no damage to the show quality.
If you need a MP3 file (keeping in mind MP3 causes sound damage), then you also need to install the "lame" software package. Audacity will not Export a MP3 music file without it.
This will seem like splitting hairs, but MP3 is a registered product of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and is licensed, paid software. They want money for it, so Audacity can't install it.

Graph? This is my blank look. You must have the more modern patched version. The slightly older version had no graphs. The older version would do a very remarkable job straight out of the box with no changes. I expect the newer one to as well.
I make the smallest change to increase the "density" of the sound, but otherwise have found no need to modify it at all.

You've selected "Compressor". Try "Compress Dynamics" lower down in the menu (below the dividing line).

That's the first time I've heard that MP3 causes some file damage or quality loss
Is Wav a better format?
Any suggestions welcomed
Oh, and I tried downloading lame
Tried exporting, and no matter what I do, I am not allowed to save to
any format other than as an Audacity project.
After doing multiple files manually, saving as a project, I am still unable
to do anything with them.
I must be missing something here.
The compression Dynamics works quite well while reviewing the results
from within Audacity. Very nice. But to take the project into a
recorded cd seems impossible.
Smack me with a lead pipe if you must, but please first try to
help me comprehend what I am stumbling over or missing.
