Generally, when installing a USB driver the device itself must NOT hooked up to the computer while the driver is being installed. Try unplugging your external sound pod's USB cord from the computer and reinstalling the driver only plugging in your device when it asks you to.

If you are buying an add-on card, compatibility with the motherboard is rarely an issue, only with the operating system.

I don't have any experience myself with PCI cards. If you go for one, look for explicit information about Windows 7 compatibility. If your main concern is capturing the audio output, I would go for this USB card:

It is compatible with Windows 7 and it does capture computer output (called "Sum"). You haven't given us an example of a Windows 7 recording, but if noise from inside the computer could be a problem, an external solution like this might be better.

We're aiming to release 2.0 around 1st December. It may not necessarily support Windows 7 fully, as we are lacking developers at the moment to work out some problems on Windows 7 and Vista. However even if full support is announced, it won't help the case where no suitable drivers for the inbuilt sound device can be found.

I just got windows 7 installed on my desktop and discovered that I can no longer record audio from my computer. Before when I used vista I remember going to the Recording tab of the sound settings and making one the devices default and I would be able to record sound from my speakers. However I can no longer do this. The only thing that remotely looks like it should be recording the sounds coming from my computer is called "Digital Audio (S/PDIF)" I don't know if this is what records sound now or if it was removed from my computer. I use a Pinnacle HD TV Tuner 800i to record video and I think this is what I used to record the sound. Windows update installed the drivers but I am still not able to record sound. I'm aware that this question may have been asked already but I can't find an answer to my problem.

I just installed the release version of Windows 7. It "installed the drivers" for my built-in SoundMax audio but the drivers it installed were three years out of date. I went to the manufacturer's site and downloaded the most current driver (had to use the Vista 64-bit as they did not list a Windows 7 driver). I also have a AudioFire4 external FireWire sound pod; Windows 7 did not install any drivers for it (as I expected) but I chose this device because it was known to have excellent 64-bit Windows 7 drivers which I install.

I strongly suggest that you go to the Pinnacle site and download the most recent Windows 7 (or Vista if Windows 7 is unavailable) driver in 32-bit or 64-bit as appropriate. Even if it looks like it is the same driver you might want to try and reinstall it, just for luck.
