Are you recording from a USB device?

You do have the same problem except it's completely different.
Audacity will not Save Sound files. To get a sound file that will play in other applications, File > Export As WAV. WAV files are perfect copies of the show on the timeline. If you don't care so much about quality, you can Export As MP3. MP3 in Audacity depends on you installing the lame software add-on.

How on Earth did I miss that !
when a USB audio device is connected to a Windows PC, Windows automatically passes the entire sound system (record and playback) to the USB device. This is obviously a problem if the USB device happens to be a turntable or microphone as these are recording only devices and have no USB playback.
To solve the issue, go into the Windows Control Panel and tell Windows to use your normal sound card for playback - not sure exactly where this is in Vista, but I'd guess it's in "Sounds and Audio Devices" (or something like that).
