freezes

Post by shinnen » Sun Oct 18, 2009 9:13 pm

Hi,
Audacity is freezing when I try to record. It looks like it's try to record because the cursor vibrates a little. Then, if I try to close it, my computer freezes. It used to work fine, until I change to a sound blaster card (CT4760).

Check the settings in Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O
Check in the Creative Mixer that you have an input enabled for recording.

Hi Steve,
Actually I changed the Playback and Recording Devices, right after I posted my original requested, to 'SB live' from 'Microsoft sound mapper', as a result of a post that I read. This caused Audacity to crash XP when I press the record button, but to stop crashing XP when I quit Audacity. (Previously .... it would refuse to record but crash on exit.) Yes...... I have SB live set for recording.

If you have crashing problems, upgrade to Audacity 1.3.9

Do I need to remove 1.3.5 first?

Probably best to do a clean install.
Uninstall Audacity in the usual way, then find the audacity.cfg file - it's a hidden file in Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacity
Open audacity.cfg in a text editor and remove all the content except the line "NewPrefsInitialized=1", then save it (this will reset the Audacity Preferences so you get a clean install).

When you have done that, install the latest 1.3 version of Audacity.

BTW, this is the Audacity 1.2.x part of the forum.

Hi Steve,
I did as you suggested, and still had the same problem. Frankly I think there's something about this card that
just doesn't like Audacity, so I've put back my older CT4700 (still a Sound Blaster). This is is OK. And now...... Audacity is running
tickety-boo.
There is however one other thing I would like to mention. Audacity doesn't seem to record in stereo. (I do have stereo selected in the preferences.) My system does seem to be set up right, if one goes by the speaker tests here....... http://www.itashiki.com/tuner/speakerpopup.htm ....... However.... when I record the left and right tests using Audacity, only the left channel test shows anything, showing the exact same pattern in the right and left spectrums. I hope this makes some sense.

Hi,
Just to summarize. In order to get back stereo recording, I removed my SB CT4700 (you may recall that the SB CT4760) kept freezing with Audacity), and put in my CMedia EZ8738. Now I have stereo recording ability, and everything seems to be fine. I did however have some trouble with Audacity 1.3.9. It didn't seem to want to recognize lame, which was installed in the programs folder, as recommended; even after uninstalling, deleting the cfg file, and resinstalling. So...... I removed 1.3.9 and reinstalled 1.3.5 and it works fine, with the older version of lame (3.98) extracted to the Audacity folder.
I thank you all for your help.
