playback speeds way too high

I just installed Audacity for Windows (XP), and re-installed, but the problem persists : When trying to playback imported music, the song flashes by in an instant, making just a terrible screeching sound.
What may be the problem here?

Thans for your help.

Thanks Richard.
That was indeed the case. Importing MP3 was no problem at all.

I have a similar problem. I was able to record a song from a 78rpm album onto my iTunes but the length of song was totally different. Itunes shows song length as 2:58, song length on album is 6:04. I did save the song as a WAV but when I play it on my iTunes, it plays in warp speed.

Are you on Windows? This is nothing to do with failed installation - you did install Audacity...

Did you record the disc at 78 rpm or does the turntable only play 33 1/3 rpm? If it only plays 33 1/3rpm did you apply the correct speed change in Audacity? Is it the correct length and speed in Audacity before you export it as WAV? Do we assume this is two sides of a 78 rpm pasted together?
