seriously screwed

i found this problem in commonly asked questions, but it didn't help. when i go into audacity, it'll let me choose the source, but then it just records silence. audacity wiki said to go the control panel and etc. but when i go to my control panel (windows xp) there's no realtek hd sound effect manager. i've already tried setting record to something other than soundmapper. plz help!!
