copy / paste issue?

I just picked up Audacity today and am toying around with it but I came across this issue and I was wondering if there was a solution or if I am simply doing something wrong myself.

Lets say I have 3 layers, 1 layer is the audio layer and the 2nd & 3rd layer are the vocal layer

If I copy and paste the phrase "My dog ate my shoe" To the beginning of the third track It will say it as normal "My dog ate my shoe"

But if I want to place it somewhere in the middle of the song it cuts off the first half of it so instead it says "te my shoe".

I then copy and pasted it back to the beginning of the layer to make sure I didnt chop anything off and it repeats "My dog ate my shoe"

Is this a known problem with Audacity? or am I simply using the copy/paste wrong in some way?

anyone able to help? O.O

Not clear from your posting exactly what you are doing.

What you need to do is to create the 3 "layers" as separate Audacity tracks. You can then move any of the individual 3 tracks up and down the timeline by using the Time Shift tool - its icon is a little square button with a short black horizontal arrow with arrow heads at each end. You don't need to be bothering with cut and paste at all probably.

When you have finalized your mix and tested it - when you Export the project Audacity will mix down the 3 tracks into a single stereo pair (or mono track if you are working in mono).
