How do I change the bitrates of many .mp3's at once?

Post by pconyers » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:39 pm

I have like 300 various .mp3's that range from like 160 to 320 in regards to their bitrate. I would like to change all theire bitrates to 128 and all at once and not have to do it one by one. Is there a way to do that with Audacity?

I have VLC but I only do video stuff with it, I have never done anything with audio files with it. Got some simple directions as to how I would accomplish my task? Would I need to have at least a specific version of VLC to do it with?

THANKS!!

"Convert/Save" from the Media menu, then follow the instructions.
VLC is probably the least good of the three programs for bulk processing, but it should be able to do it. Just try it out on a couple of small files first before you start loading dozens in at a time.

Foobar2000 is an excellent audio player for Windows (plays just about anything audio) and can convert files from a playlist.

SUPER is a purpose built media file encoder decoder (based on MPlayer) and supports a massive range of audio and video file types. It also has very good file format analysis information, and rudimentary support for playing files.

I used to use MusicMatch 8 to do all this and it was so simple. I would just like to find something that would do all this so easily.

If you don't mind doing it in 2 passes (MP3 > WAV > MP3) then LamedropXPd is ridiculously easy to use.
Right click on the program (which looks like a postage stamp) to set your preferences, then just drag a load of files onto it. MP3's are decoded to WAV and WAVs are encoded to MP3. It really can not get any more simple.

But why would you want to do that in the first place?

300 music files is not that many and MP3 players an iPods have large "disks" available now - degrading the MP3s to 128 will give you what is generally regarded as the lowest acceptable quality for audio?

So I'm puzzled?

A note that any time you change a compressed file it gets worse even if you stay in the same bitrate, and everybody's natural inclination is to "write over" the old files with the same filenames. That's fine if everything goes OK, but if it doesn't, you have no show and no good way to get one any more the originals having been destroyed.

Always make safety copies of original sound files before you mess with batch conversions or other processes.
