No waveform being recorded

Hello,
The red recording cursor moves across the screen but no waveform (only a flat line) is drawn behind it and I have done everything that the Audacity wiki recommended (re-set up my recording device and input source).

My Sound Playback default device is Realtek HD Audio Output, Sound Recording default device is Realtek HD Audio input, and my mixer device is Realtek HD Audio Output as well. I have synchronized these settings with my Audacity Audio I/O preferences, but I still cannot record a thing.

I have even chosen "Microsoft Sound Mapper" just for kicks, to see if it would fix this problem (it didn't). I've also tried updating my drivers (they apparently don't need updating).Essentially, I've unchecked/checked every single option that was available and exhausted my troubleshooting powers.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What input are you trying to record from? Line In, Mic In, Stereo Mix, etc.?

If you're trying to record a Stereo Mix signal and this wiki page doesn't help you then you will probably need new or drivers that supply that signal. Neither Sigmatel nor Realtek write the drivers for their chips, so it's up to the computer manufacturers to write proper drivers. Most of them don't seem to keen on providing a Stereo Mix recording signal. I have no idea why except that audio is very low on the priorities list for computer manufacturers.

I am having the same/similar problem: have Realtek, but I cannot choose a device...it's greyed out, so I can use "What-U-Hear" or anything.

I have a Realtek HD in my Dell laptop. It came delivered with a software tool installed in the system tray in the bottom right-hand corner to manage the Realtek device. You can configure it to control the input levels and the input devices (and more besides).

This thread shows an image of my Relatek HD s/w interface: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic ... +HD#p30984
