Help with recording a guitar

okay. i have audacity for windows and i plugged in my guitar with just a cable and couldnt get any sound. then i ran it through my amp and then i got a sound but it cut out ALOT and i was using the clean channel and it sounded really crappy and distorted. any solutions or help are greatly appreciated.
