First, you should be using your Line In to record that from. But that's neither here nor there, putting a really big signal into a Mic In isn't going to hurt your card, or cause it to refuse to record.
Second, if it's a PCI card, take the case apart and make sure the PCI card is seated correctly. If your case got jostled or kicked some of the pins might not be connected.
If that doesn't help, then I'm with Koz on this one, I think the card is dead. The fact that your motherboard audio works fine is evidence of that.
As one final test, try using Windows Sound Recorder to record something from your (possibly dead) sound card. If that doesn't work and the mother board card does, then I'll be convinced that your nicer card's input circuitry has died.
not recording anymore, system resources?

Re: not recording anymore, system resources?
cheers heaps for all the replies, i took out and re seated the card in a different slot and that fixed the problem, allbeit with a crash or 2 in the mix. i think its the computer to be honest. a few weeks ago the harddrive didnt boot, so my parents got rid of it and thats why i have it. but i recorded an hours worth last night and it was okay but i did get distortion but i think it was the comp doing something it didnt need to do. i just put the cord into whichever port shows up on the level meter, so i dont know which it is(mic or line), but the end result is okay so i dont think i needd to worry
cheers
