How to synchronize the volume levels of many .wav files

Post by rickywh » Tue Sep 29, 2009 2:02 am

Hi

I have gathered up about ten .wav files from around the internet at free sound resource websites. I want to use the sounds in a video game i'm making. I noticed that as is, some of the sounds are noticably louder than the rest and I'm hoping someone can help me synchronize the sound levels so they are the exact same volume level and then I can resave them to store them that way.

Any help much appreciated.

You can use Audacity's "Amplify" effect.

Effect > Amplify

Set the 'New Peak Amplitude (dB)' value to be the same for each file, (0dB is the maximum, -3dB is a good level to aim for) and export as .WAV

If they still don't seem to be at the same level, some of them may have compression added and others may not. You will have to go back again and change whichever ones seem too loud or too soft, until they sound the same.

You can also use Chris's Compressor which takes a more active role in volume leveling. This one changes individual phrases and segments so everything matches...

If you're after artistic integrity, this one's not for you, but this does the same job as a radio station -- leveling everything to the same volume. I don't know if you can batch it, though. I'm guessin' no.
