I bought a Behringer USB/Guitar interface today, and have spent most of the day mucking about with the software, as I want to use the software as digital amplification for my guitar, to then record it using Audacity.

I have a particular problem that someone might be able to help with.

The ASIO USB interface only works with the Guitar Combo software using one particular USB port. However, when it is plugged into this port Windows and Audacity do not recognise it as an audio device. If I plug it into a different port then Windows and Audacity recognise it, and I can record in Audacity with it.

I haven't yet managed to record the amplified guitar sound in Audacity, so how do I get both programmes to recognise the USB ASIO device at the same time?

There is also an issue with the guitar software, in that the input plays with the guitar effects, but the output does not, which I think might also cause a problem with recording...anyone got any tips?

Reading through the wiki pages, could it be that I'm attempting to use the soundcard with two things at once, which wont work because it is a basic sound card?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Stop using ASIO drivers? ASIO is paid software, so there is little or no ASIO support in Audacity. If your system supports Windows drivers, then that may be the way out.

You may not, ever. Audacity is a really simple program and it likes running on really simple computers. Audacity will not record or manage multiple sound devices and it almost certainly will not like sharing one device with another program. This comes up a lot with people trying to record Skype sessions.

Record with the supplied software and then save or export the recording in WAV format.

You can then open or Import the WAV in Audacity, edit and process to your hearts content, then Export from Audacity as a WAV file (or another format if you prefer).
Note that "Save" in Audacity does NOT create an audio file - it makes an Audacity Project that can only be opened in Audacity. To get a normal audio file from Audacity you must Export.

I've thought of doing that, and it should work. However, I only seem to be able to record the 'dry' sound of the guitar, i.e. the sound coming out of the guitar lead rather than what is coming out of the effects programme.

I've yet to work out how to record the guitar AND the effects, but I guess that's one for the Native Instruments forums. Ho hum. I don't know if you can record the dry sound, then add the effects later, as that's how their demos work.

Thanks very much for your help, everyone. It's strange, as the package of the USB/Guitar interface hardware came with the Guitar Combo software, plus Audacity, plus another recording/production programme called Energy XT, none of which seem to be compatible with another. I don't know if it's the way I'm set up, or my computer, or if it's just not possible. But it seems strange to sell them packaged together if they don't work together.
