Just bought myself a very nice Samson G-track microphone. It uses the USB Audio Codec and therein lies the problem I think - the recorded sound level through it is very low though playback is very normal.
Anyone any idea as to how to turn up the recording level?

Stop trying to listen to it while you're recording. That's dangerous. If you get the red recording bouncing lights in the right place and the waveform is correct--and it plays OK, then everything is working as it should.
You can go into the Windows Audio Panels and increase the volume of the playback, but you risk creating echoes in the performance as it's recorded.

Sorry Ken I wasn't quite clear enough there.
I meant that when I record using it the volume is very low.
Any other file that I playback (not any I have made using the Samson) the sound is the normal volume - the speakers are connected through and volume is controlled by the Samson.
The microphone volume is greyed out when using the USB codec so you cannot increase the recording volume using it or audacity...

Just installed the Audacity 1.33 beta and everything now works fine for some reason
Sound Recorder is still crap but who the hell cares about that now Audacity works okay.
