That's pretty much what's supposed to be happening, yes. If you carefully pull the cable out of the tape player and plug headphones in, do you hear anything?

I didn't think to try that because I was seeing the green and red bars on the VU meter, but I just checked it and I got sound from the headphone. I hope this isn't a problem with the computer's jack. I'm hoping it's just some setting I need to change. I'll pick this up after getting back from work.
