no playback sound when recording

i have used audacity on other computers multiple times and each time once one track was recorded, it would be played while other tracks get recorded. But....for some reason, this time downloading audacity, when i record something i can hear it fine when i actually press play, but when i record expecting to hear playback of previous recordings, i hear nothing. I searched the menus and couldn't find anything. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated..Thanks in advance!!!

Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > [x] Play old tracks while recording new ones.
