If I play a video through YouTube or a song through Windows Media, I can't get the Audacity programme to record it. I'm using version 1.3.9, and I've tried to follow the instructions on the other post for this sort of thing, but they don't work.
My Devices section (there is no Audio I/O section that I can find in Preferences) is set thus:
Interface Host: MME
Playback: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output
Recording: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input; Channels: 2(Stereo)
On my other computer I have version 1.3.8 and it works fine from there, with the exact same settings. Can't get it to work on 1.3.9 though.
Any ideas?

Using Windows Vista 64-bit, and XP on my other pc. I can record through the microphone on my headphones.

Convenient internal recording has been carefully filtered out of a lot of newer machines. Macs have never been able to do this and the PC people are starting to see the wisdom of that. Multiple recursive feedback sound pathways get (PC) people into trouble all the time, and it's serious magic when it does.

Which pathways, faders, or switches did you leave open by accident? And it changes with the sound card and computer.
You can use Total Recorder on the PC like I do and the pathways are created for you when they are needed. There may be other programs, but that's the license I have and happily use. If you have a deskside PC, you can also use a short jumper cable between the headphone out and Line-In. Laptops tend to be missing the Line-In.
Another way is to get those connections with an external USB sound card.
