I have Windows XP- I downloaded Audacity successfully but when trying to download the LAME MP3 encoder following these instructions:-
Go to the LAME download page, left click "Lame v3.98.2 for Audacity on Windows.exe" -
I get the message "we were unable to locate the file to download" and the website is lame.buanzo.com.ar/
These same instructions are in several sites- I removed & reinstalled the Audacity program -but the same problem re-occured.
I'm very limited on technical knowledge & don't know what to try- but need the "Wave to MP3 conversion capabilities to do the music sharing I'm working on.
Information & simple instructions would be so appreciated.

It looks like your problem is with your browser not being able to download Lame, rather than with Audacity.
The Lame download page has a note at the top pointing this out, and assuring us that the files are really there.
I have just now successfully downloaded Lame 3.98.2 from that site, with Explorer, but your browser settings may be causing problems.
On the other hand, if you just want to convert WAV files to MP3, without doing any editing, Audacity may not be the best tool for you. It is designed for recording, editing and processing audio files, and will also export them in different formats, but it takes a little learning.
If you just want a file converter, one I have used successfully is 'Switch' from NCH Software.
It is free and you can get it here: http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
Just drag your WAVs into it, select the type of output file you want and press the button.

If you are unable to download the file to your computer there may have been a temporary problem with the web site.
The encoding options in Audacity 1.2 are quite limited. If MP3 encoding is important you would be better to install Audacity 1.3.9
In Audacity 1.3.9, Open the Edit menu and select Preferences. Go to the "Libraries" tab and follow the instructions for installing Lame.
