Recording is Clipping

Post by mambler » Mon Sep 07, 2009 6:36 pm

We record with a room mic in order to save practice sessions. It's not the greatest recording, but it serves the purpose of cataloging ideas in the song writing process. The problem I am having is that the recordings are clipping. I think volume is a trigger for this but I've tried mixing at nearly zero volume and the recording still clips. I have a sneaking suspicion that my computer doesn't have enough RAM and is not processing the recording fast enough, resulting in the clipping throughout. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I right? I just want to make sure before I go out and buy a bunch more RAM for the computer.

<<<the recordings are clipping.>>>

How sure are you about that? Clipping happens at the exact time you say a word or sing a note. Data problems can be sprinkled all over the recording and not seem to have any relation to the song. Like if you sing one constant note, data problems will be sprinkled all over. clipping problems will get enormously worse if you increase your voice volume very slightly.

<<<I've tried mixing>>>

Mixing with what? Describe what happens between the singer's lips and the computer. In detail. Pretend I want to build what you have.
