You don't need Lame in order to play back audio in Audacity; it uses your computer's sound card for playback.
You only need Lame if you want to export your Audacity project as an MP3 file.

The experts here are very helpful, but they need to know in detail what the problem is, before trying to answer it, such as;
Have you recorded a project in Audacity or imported an audio file?
Can you hear playback from other applications, e.g. Windows Media Player?
What can you see on the screen?
etc.

There is no such thing as a "free trial version" of Audacity. ALL versions of Audacity are free and can be downloaded from

The current "Stable" version is 1.2.6, but this is practically obsolete.
The current "Beta" version is 1.3.9, and this is practically stable. It is recommended by the forum experts.

BTW, the moderators would prefer if you didn't post the same query in different parts of the forum; it makes it very difficult to keep track.
