static pop even after normalize

Post by MikeB » Wed Sep 02, 2009 2:44 pm

I read nearly every post on here about static pop, seems the fix is to normalize each wav before editing it. I tryed that, no go...Here's my problem. I have used Audacity for probably 3 yrs on the same computer, Dell with windows xp. I love this program, never had a problem until I bought a new, bigger computer that I am using just for music, another dell, 250 Gig HD 2 gig ram, windows xp. I first transfered my original audacity program from my old PC to my new one via cd. Then I transfered my wav files for my existing songs the same way. When I play them in the audacity program now, on this new PC,there is a distinct pop sound, that shows up through out the songs. It sounds just like when you drag your socks across the carpet and then touch your sisters nose...:-) It never did this on the other computer. So I went to Audacity site and DLed another program, The same version, I.2, the stable one, opened it up, transfered files from my recorder, so they were fresh, never edited, normalized each seperate wav file the way it says to here at this forum, and on play back I still get pops.. Whats really weird is they move around, they might do it 3 times in a row at the very same place, then quit, and go to another place.. Is it possible that this is a sound card issue?? Im stumped, any advice is welcomed, Thanks>>>> Mike

You may have a number of the tools mixed up. Normalize > Remove DC Level (Only!) removes any DC damage that may be present in the clip so that it will not click or pop when you combine it with another clip. It's an editing thing and has nothing to do with straight playback quality.

If you have a snapping sound sprinkled through a show and they're not repeatable, then that's a playback problem. Can you play back Other Stuff? can you lilsten to YouTube? Play a Music CD? do all those sound OK?

Hi Koz.. I use the normalize> remove dc level only effect, i used it on each wav file that I loaded onto audacity, I tryed quick mix, then normalize>remove dc level only, Ive tryed a variation of things, and it still pops. I can play youtube and cd's play fine, but I really have to think it is a playback/PC issue, because it doesnt do it on my old pc. I was just curious to see if anyone else has had this problem. if you have any ideas, I'll sure listen. Thanks >>> Mike
