Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Importing sounds like chipmunks

Post by jeeper1 » Tue Oct 30, 2007 2:40 am

Complete newbie...
Why does my import of an audio file from itunes sound like the chipmunks singing? How do I slow it down so the song sounds normal?

Because almost certainly you are importing/opening AAC files which are Apple's proprietary format and Audacity does not support this format - and wha'ts more you don't even get a sensible error message from Audacity to advise you of the nature of the problem. Audacity supports WAV, MP3 Ogg (and in 1.3 FLAC)

You can either convert the file through a software converter (not sure if iTunes will do this for you, but I suspect not) - but you may find the Digital Rights Management that Apple kidly puts on the file will get in the way of this. Or you can play the track in iTunes and set up Audacity to record from your PC while you are playing it - this takes longer, but will work - and the pesky DRM will not be there.

Either that, or the sample rate is encoded in that file wrong (or in a non-standard way). Right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select Properties -> Summary -> Advanced. Somewhere here, Windows should tell you the sample rate of the file. Now import it into an empty Audacity Project and make sure the sample rate of the project changes to the right rate.

These problems are kind of tricky.
