Cannot find recording device

Hi sorry if this has already been asked,and or solved i am having trouble recording through my soundcard,i am not even sure if its possible anymore,i used to be able to do it until i "upgraded" to vista.I am not 100% precent sure what soundcard I have,but it is listed as realtek high definition audio.I have tried everything but i just cannot record through it at all.Windows sound recorder gives me the message "an audio recording device cannot be found" and in audacity it is not listed under audio I/O recording device.Once again sorry if i am shouldnt be asking this here.
