I am using Audacity 1.2.6 to convert voice recordings on cassette tapes into MP3 files. I have a dubbing cable connected from the EAR plug of my tape recorder to the MIC plug of my computer. My voice recordings are typically 30 to 60 minutes long. I am monitoring the recorded sound using some earphones and the Monitor Input function of Audacity.
I notice that after a few minutes of recording Audacity seems to be applying noise removal. This seems to be a progressive function, and Audacity seems to apply noise removal more strongly the longer the recording goes. I don't want this. It makes it harder for me to use my voice recordings. I want to transfer exactly what is on my old cassette tapes to MP3, I don't want it filtered.
I have not been able to find a way to stop noise removal by Audacity during recording. Does anybody know how to do it? Have I diagnosed my problem correctly, or could something else be going on?
How do I disable noise removal during recording?

What? Audacity doesn't do real-time effects (especially while recording), so it isn't applying Noise Removal to the track while you're recording.
It sounds to me like you're using the wrong Input to record with and your hardware doesn't like it much. You should plug the headphone jack of your tape deck into the Line In on your computer to record with, a Mic Input wasn't designed to handle a signal like that (nor was it designed to be useful at all, IMO).
If you've got a laptop with no Line In, then you'll need new hardware. The Behringer UCA202 is cheap and we don't get complaints about it.

Thanks for the tip. I have ordered a Behringer UCA202 and will post a follow-up after I try it out.

Re: How do I disable noise removal during recording?
I received a Behringer UCA202 today and tried it out. It appears to have solved my problem. My notebook computer is a Dell Insprion E1505. Apparently the MIC input to this computer does not work well. The recording starts out fine, but after some minutes, for reasons I don't understand, the recording becomes muted, with only the loudest sounds getting through.
If anybody else has this problem, try getting a USB/Audio interface like the UCA202. It works!
