Hi Koz - I cleared a lot of space last night and its been working fine all day - thanks for the tips, I will look at upgrading asap.

You do need to perform the defragmentation.

Windows splits files up into fragments to fit the data into all the nooks and crannys on the hard drive. Space on the drive is only clean and clear for about the first week, after that, it's all scrambled.

The more scramble, the slower the drive is. Defragmentation shuffles the fragments around so they're neatly next to each other. The drive doesn't have to go looking for them.

It easily doubles the speed of the drive, frequently more. Highly recommended for both audio and video production. Also, as a byproduct, it makes it easier to rescue valuable work if your hard drive goes in the toilet.
